HUMDINGER HUMMUS
Makes 1¼ cups
Hummus is a popular dip and spread in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisines. The star ingredient is the chickpea—which is a bean!
KITCHEN TALK: Once you learn how to make this basic hummus, try adding tahini (sesame seed paste) and/or seasonings like paprika, roasted garlic, za'atar, or everything bagel seasoning. Be sure to thoroughly rinse chickpeas to wash off the canning liquid. Ask a grown-up for help with using plug-in kitchen tools.
Ingredients
- 1 (15.5-ounce) can chickpeas, drained and rinsed
- ¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil
- 1½ tablespoons fresh lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons ice water
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon fine sea salt, plus more if needed
Instructions
- Place the chickpeas, olive oil, lemon juice, ice water, cumin, garlic powder, and salt in a food processor. Process until smooth and creamy, about 3 minutes. Taste and add more salt, if you want.
- Scoop the hummus into a bowl and serve with whatever you like. Store leftover hummus in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
For Serving!
- Crunchy veggies, such as carrot and bell pepper strips, celery sticks, cherry tomatoes, and/or broccoli florets
- Torn pitas or pita chips
- Pretzels
Tip: Use leftovers to make a hummus and veggie sandwich!
